48 hours in Kildare - best hotels, restaurants and things to do on your next staycation

Kildare is packed with fun things to do and see. We stayed in the fabulous Kilkea Castle and were treated like royalty by the helpful and polite staff. Plus the food was out of this world!

Kildare is often overlooked as a staycation destination, but it’s actually packed with great things to see and do. And just a short trip from Dublin, it’s super handy for anyone living in the capital!

My partner and I don't drive so we got the train from Heuston, which took only half an hour, and from there the town centre is within easy walking distance.

Here's what we got up to on our weekend away - and my top recommendations for anyone planning a holiday or a day out.

Where to stay

We were lucky enough to stay in the luxurious Kilkea Castle, which is set on 180 acres of woodland and boasts everything from an 18 hole par 70 championship parkland golf course to newly refurbished tennis courts to a falconry experience.

The Boutique spa has five treatment rooms and a state-of-the-art thermal suite - I was treated to a massage that left me feeling as light as a cloud, and a facial catered to my skincare concerns (using lovely Elemis skincare products - my new favourite brand!).

We dined in Restaurant 1180, and had an amazing table overlooking the castle's rose garden. Looking out the window as the sun set, we tucked into some of the best food I've had all year. My partner's green pea risotto was so delicious, he was close to tears.

After dinner, we took a stroll around the formal gardens before collapsing in our sumptuous and spacious room. Absolute bliss!

Where to eat

We had breakfast and dinner in Kilkea Castle, but we also grabbed a delicious lunch in the Gallops Bar & Restaurant at Kildare House Hotel which perfectly set us up for the afternoon. I recommend the chicken wings!

The restaurant at the Japanese Gardens is also lovely if you fancy walking off your food in the beautiful surroundings afterwards - plus there's a playground for kids.

What to do

Love shopping? Kildare Village has over 100 boutiques and is the perfect spot for some retail therapy. Treat yourself to some designer goods or get that Christmas gift list crossed off!

Redhills Adventure Centre offers archery, paintballing, airsoft and loads more - a great day out for families, groups or even competitive couples. Set on what was once a working farm just a few kilometers away from Kildare Village, the brothers who own the place are always adding new activities and it's a real labour of love.
